A personal reflective journal on Freud’s defense mechanisms

DISPLACEMENT

It is the redirection of drive energy towards a substitute object, is one of the most common defence mechanisms and is used typically whenever the direct expression of drives would be too threatening, due to either the disapproval of superego or a realistic threat associated with the original object; in such situations we tend to seek a substitute object. The substitute object is normally a good friend, or family or pet.
There was a time in school when it seemed that all the teachers had something against me .Almost every teacher is school loaded us with homework and at same time got very angry with me for some stupid reason or other. I was really annoyed because I would do all the homework on time and do my best in all the tests, and the teachers shouted at me for absolutely no rhyme or reason.
When I went home I was tired and frustrated and wanted to go to sleep but my mother insisted that I work on my big art project. I knew I would not be allowed to get peace of mind even at home so I just decided to work. When I finished working my younger brother came upto me and asked to play but I refused. He took his toy and tried to spoil my art work. At that very instance I slapped him really hard and started shouting at him.
He said that he did not mean to spoil my art work and started crying. I then realized that I had taken all my frustration out on my little brother. I felt really horrible after that but it did not take more than fifteen minutes for me and my brother to patch up.
This would be called displacement as I redirected anger and frustration from my teachers (one object) to my brother (substitute object).

IDENTIFICATION

Identification is incorporating one’s drive object into one’s ego. It occurs with those individuals who are either admired or feared. For instance, hostages may come to adopt some of the values of their captors. In movies, books or plays, identification with a character can provide a form of release called catharsis- the vicarious release of drive energy. When we are unable to directly express sexual or aggressive impulses, we may adopt the guise of a figure in whom such impulses are acceptable.
I remember the time when I was crazy about a Bollywood actress. I loved to watch her onscreen and would always imitate her. I would watch her movies again and again. I would imitate her dance moves and even say the same dialogues as her. My friends and family did not stop me from doing that nor did they encourage me. As I grew elder I started getting over my craze for her and her dance moves.

RATIONALIZATION

It is one of most interesting defences; it involves offering an acceptable reason for behaviour in place of the true reason (acceptable to the ego, though the approval of the other people may be a concern as well). When we engage in rationalization, we try to justify our actions. Rationalization may be combined with other defences as well, to provide a justification for behaviour. Rationalization may protect self-esteem and self- concept and prevents anxiety. In case of failures people tend to blame it on others or outside forces.
Every time I am lazy to do a particular task, I land piling up a lot of work. Although I am aware of the consequences, I happen to take it easily thinking that I will be able to handle it. Once I faired poorly in my test and I blamed it all on the extensive amount of work that I had.
This can be a good example of rationalization.

REACTION AND FORMATION

Reacting in a way which is opposite to one’s actual impulses; it reduces anxiety by taking up an opposite feeling. It is used to hide the true feelings.
I always try and hide my feelings in front of the people I don’t know. I was not very fond of my teacher because he would always minus marks or reduce my grades for no rhyme or reason and it was not possible for me take out my frustration and anger on him.
I did not want to get detention or be shouted at in return. Instead I would give him smile every time I would see him and try and be very calm around him as if he had done nothing to me. In such a way I would help myself and avoid more grave consequences that I would have to bear.

SUBLIMATION

In Freud’s theory, a defence mechanism in which drives energy is redirected toward a socially desirable creative activity. While sublimation is useful, because it results in a socially useful product, it is also limited as gratification is indirect and cannot fully satisfy demands of the id. The creative activity that which sublimation supports makes it more than simply a response to neurotic activity.
For e.g. I was extremely in love with peacocks at a very young age and because I had never gotten a chance to see peacocks at that point, I would sit and draw pictures of peacocks. I drew so many of them that every time I drew it, I got better at it and eventually I was so good that people would appreciate it and compliment me for those several peacocks that I had drawn.

FREUD’S PSYCHOSEXUAL STAGES

ORAL STAGE

In this stage, an infant’s mouth is the main source of interaction. That is why sucking and the rooting reflexes occur mostly at this stage. The infants depend mostly on the caretakers (who are responsible for feeding them), the infant also develops a sense trust and comfort through this oral stimulation. If fixation occurs at this stage then the child can have problems with dependency and aggression. The child can have problems with eating, drinking and nail biting.
In my case, I don’t think I was orally fixated to a grave extent. Although I would bite my nails till I was like 4 or 5 yrs old, I got rid of that bad habit and it wasn’t very difficult. I would blame oral fixation for my bad habit. By making me constantly aware of the dirt that was going into my stomach because of my nail biting habit, I slowly gave up the habit.

ANAL STAGE

According to Freud, the main focus of the libido is to control bladder and bowel movements. The major conflict at this stage is toilet training-the child has to learn to control his/her bodily needs. Developing this control is very essential.
Toilet training is mostly dependant on how parents train their children. Parents, who praise and reward their children for the use of the toilet on the right time, help their children feel productive and capable. Such an attitude encourages positive outcomes.
On the other hand, some parents ridicule and punish their children for accidents. This encourages negative outcomes.
If the parents are too strict with their children, anal- retentive personality can develop and lead their children to become very rigid and obsessive.
If parents are too lenient with their children then anal –compulsive personality can develop and lead their children to become very messy and unorganized.
In my case my parents would praise me if I would use the toilet at the right time. This encouraged me and I didn’t face serious problems at a later stage. I was kind of toilet trained when I was about 5 – 6 yrs old because my parents would encourage me to use the toilet before going to school so that I wouldn’t have to suffer in school. I was never forced or ridiculed, and this led me into not being too messy or being too rigid with my toilet habits. I can control my bodily needs.

PHALLIC STAGE

During this stage, the primary focus is on the genitals. Children begin to understand the gender differences. Boys begin to view their father as rivals for their mother’s affection. The Oedipus complex describes these feelings of wanting to possess the mother and the desire to replace the father. While the term Electra complex describes similar feelings in case of young girls. According to Freud girls experience penis envy.
He also believed that penis envy was never fully resolved and that all women remain somewhat fixated on this stage.
In my case I have been always close to both my parents but when I was really young I would be closer to my father than my mother. I never really experienced jealousy against my mother for my father’s affection.

LATENT PERIOD

This stage begins at the time when children go to school and get interested in their peers and their hobbies. In other words they become interested in relationships. In this stage a sexual energy is present but it is mostly directed towards social interactions and other goals and pursuits.
This stage really helps a child gain self- confidence to interact with his/her peers and be socially active. It helps a child develop communication skills.
I was quite an introvert till the 4th Grade and had only one good friend. But slowly I got out of my small cocoon and started making more friends. It all began when I stood 1st in my class and my drawing was chosen for the school magazine and because of this I got attention from my classmates. Since then nothing stops me from interacting with my peers and I am more of an extrovert. I feel confident socially and can easily discuss in conferences even with absolute strangers.

GENITAL STAGE

During this stage an individual develops strong interest in the opposite sex.The person begins to care about the welfare of others unlike earlier stages where the main motto was one’s individual needs. This stage helps the individual get a balance between various areas of life.
I remember the time when I would be really interested in knowing everything about the guys in my class. I would talk to all of them and I had more guy friends that girl friends. I still interact with the boys in my class but not obsessed with knowing everything about them, impressing them or even trying to act “cool” in front of them. As far as welfare of others in concerned I always try really hard to keep all my family and friends happy by trying to solve their problems, spending some quality time with them.

ID, SUPEREGO, EGO

ID in Freud's theory, is the element of the psyche which is the source of all basic drives. EGO in pyschonanalysis is the element of the psyche which provides the integrating of personality by mediating between the ID and the SUPEREGO, and also mediates the links with the outside world. SUPEREGO in Freud's theory, that portion of the psyche which represents the moral demands of family and society and is therefore governed by moral constraints.
I had an option of going to a boarding school and staying home to do college. My ID would look out for immediate needs and want me to stay home because if wanted to then I could bunk classes in college at home and get away with it. In other words my life would be really easy at home compared to being in a boarding school. But my SUPER EGO would tell me to choose the morally right way. According to me the morally right way would be to work hard so that I can have a bright future, than spending my time unreasonably.
My EGO would make me aware of the world( in other words the influence of my friends and family). It would help me look at the brighter side of being in a boarding school and also look at how my friends were too doing tougher courses for getting into a good university.
This would definitely influence me to choose going to a boarding school and living independently.
In my case my EGO helped me making the right decision and going to "KIS"i.e. boarding school.
In a healthy person, according to Freud the ego is the strongest so that it can satisfy the needs of ID and not upset the SUPEREGO, taking the reality of every condition into consideration.Id in person shouldn't be too strong because it does not let make the right decisions. It aggravates an individual's drives. The person's impulses and self-gratification takes over the person's life. In cases where the person's SUPEREGO is the strongest, the person is morally guided all the time and is very judgmental in his interactions with the world. It is the EGO that maintains the control.
